MY OVERALL ASSESSMENT AFTER WATCHING was that this was okay but not at all deep enough an investigation to satisfy what I was looking for. There was a complete lack of SELF-criticality from many of the “Butch” spectrum men which is really just their own problem, and doesn’t help me in my academic and personal investigations whatsoever. The femme presenting people they talked to were generally much more versed in processing their identities. A few of the butch men seemed to envy the strength that comes from identifying as femme and having to deal with the constant pressure from both the heterosexual mainstream and the gay butch men who wished they’d just “man up” whatever the fuck that is. Some of the butch men felt oppressed within the gay community because “they didn’t fit in” with the femme guys. Fuck that shit. More of them were seemed to have internalized homophobia issues because they didn’t want to be considered fags and didn’t want to be associated with effeminate gay men. Seriously, FUCK THAT SHIT. When you can give me an interesting intellectual reason to give up my flamboyance for your rigid misogynistic views about how I conduct myself then we’ll talk, but if you’re just gonna be like “Oh ew you just like fashion and being a flamer” then you can go fuck yourself, I have DOM duties to take care of. 

I’m more interested in the paradoxes of presentations and would’ve valued hearing more about that. The men who just ID as butch because that’s how they are, not because they think femmes are disgusting and unworthy. The men of color who face dual pressures for being both gay and not white. Thanks for talking briefly to two black guys and almost getting to something interesting and then showing a bunch of white bears all clustered around one another, pretending that their community is still ruled by its founding principles of acceptance and that they all just look exactly alike because that’s how they look. Your camo cargo shorts are JUST as much a performance and a decision as my lipstick, and your dog tags are just as decorative as my leather necklace harness. 

None of the femmes had negative shit to say about the butch men. The effeminate men just talked about how difficult it is to deal with gender presentation pressure, bullying, harassment, assault, etc. Many of the butch men defined themselves PARTICULARLY against femme gays and used homophobic language to describe what they were not. Fuck you. 

There’s like this moment at the end where some of the academics talk about promoting gender fluidity but it’s not fully explored. 

All in all, good for you Butch dudes, you get to be butt-hurt about not being one of us flamboyantly flippant meanwhile oppressing us further, and you get the approval of the straight world without fear of physical retribution.
